For reasons of efficiency, the "Austrian Society for Great Bustard
Conservation (ÖGG)" was founded in 2004 with the approval of the
departments for nature conservation of the provincial governments
of Lower Austria and Burgenland. The purpose of this "public interest"
society is both to implement the current Austrian Great Bustard
LIFE Project and to advance Great Bustard conservation across provinces
in Austria in the future.
Before 2004, Great Bustard conservation in Austria only had societies
operating at a regional level, as well as one society with a cross-border
portfolio. These included the society "Grüne Welt" in Goggendorf,
working in the "Western Weinviertel" bustard area, the society "Distelverein"
in Deutsch-Wagram, working in the "Sandboden and Praterterrasse"
bustard area, the "Interessensgemeinschaft Großtrappenschutz Parndorfer
Platte - Heideboden" in Zurndorf, working in the "Parndorfer Platte
- Heideboden" bustard area, and the cross-border "Pannonic Society
for Great Bustard Preservation (PGG)" in Vienna. All of these, however,
seemed unsuitable for implementing a large LIFE Project, and for
this reason the new ÖGG society was founded. The executive committee
and advisory board of the ÖGG consist of one representative each
from the departments for nature conservation of the provincial governments
of Lower Austria and Burgenland, similarly one representative each
from the societies Grüne Welt, the Interessensgemeinschaft Großtrappenschutz
Parndorfer Platte - Heideboden, the Pannonic Society for Great Bustard
Preservation (PGG), and from the Institute for Institute of Wildlife
Biology and Game Management.
The ÖGG is committed to bringing all its activities and undertakings
into line with the conservation objectives of the Natura 2000 sites
(SPAs) concerned. Conservation measures will be in line with the
intentions of the provincial governments of Lower Austria and Burgenland
to meet their obligations under the EU Birds Directive.
